Two members of the South African Police Service Tactical Response Team (TRT) have died in a single-vehicle crash in eMalahleni while travelling to Pretoria for court proceedings.
Police say the officers were on official duty, en route to testify in ongoing cases before the courts, when the driver of the state vehicle lost control, resulting in the fatal accident.
The deceased officers were attached to the eManguzi Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal, where they were involved in operations targeting cross-border criminal activity.
SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the incident and extended condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the fallen officers.
She said Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Dimpane has also expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and the police service.
“The names of the deceased will be released once all immediate family members have been informed,” Mathe said, adding that the SAPS Employee Health and Wellness unit has been deployed to provide psychosocial support to affected families and colleagues.
Authorities say investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
