A suspected food-related incident at the Ekuphumleni Matric Revision Centre has left dozens of matric pupils ill, prompting a health investigation in the Eastern Cape.
A total of 39 learners were rushed to Hewu Hospital on Sunday evening after reporting symptoms of vomiting and stomach cramps shortly after having supper at around 6pm.
Of those affected, 37 pupils were discharged later that night, while the remaining two were kept under observation and released on Monday.
The learners are part of a group of 194 matric pupils participating in a revision programme in the Chris Hani East Education District.
Health authorities have since collected food samples from the centre for laboratory testing to determine the cause of the illness. Results are still pending.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the incident is linked to food contamination, but an investigation is ongoing.
