United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced concern over reports of xenophobic violence in KwaZulu-Natal, warning against rising tensions targeting foreign nationals.

In a statement issued alongside his message marking Freedom Day, Guterres condemned criminal actions by individuals accused of inciting violence and exploiting socio-economic challenges.

He stressed that violence, vigilantism and hate speech have no place in a democratic society founded on the rule of law and respect for human rights.

The remarks follow reports of attacks in parts of the province directed at Ghanaian and other African nationals over their immigration status.

The South African government, including the Ministry of Police, has also denounced the incidents, describing them as contrary to the principles underpinning the country’s democracy.

Guterres further reflected on South Africa’s history, noting that the struggle against apartheid was supported by international and African solidarity. He added that the nation’s development has long been shaped by the contributions of people from across the continent and beyond.

While acknowledging ongoing socio-economic pressures, the UN chief emphasised that any grievances must be addressed within the confines of the law and without discrimination.
