The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning over an approaching cold front expected to bring widespread rain, strong winds and a sharp drop in temperatures across large parts of South Africa from Friday through to Monday.

Forecasters say the system will move eastward across the country, spreading cold conditions and unsettled weather. Coastal areas are expected to be hit by rough seas, with wave heights reaching up to five metres, while inland regions could experience localised flooding and dangerous travel conditions.

SAWS forecaster Tokelo Chiloane said scattered showers and thundershowers are expected in several provinces, including Gauteng, Free State, North West, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

“The cold conditions will spread into central and eastern parts of the country, with scattered showers and thundershowers expected. By Sunday, the system will reach the eastern and southern coastline, bringing rough seas with wave heights between four and five metres, which may disrupt coastal activities,” Chiloane said.

He added that temperatures are expected to drop significantly, particularly in high-lying areas, where strong winds will intensify the cold.

Authorities have warned of possible impacts, including slippery roads, reduced visibility and localised flooding, urging the public to exercise caution during the adverse weather conditions.
