The eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to remain vigilant following a Level 2 weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service, effective on Wednesday, 16 April 2026.

Forecasts indicate widespread showers and severe thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal, with the eThekwini region expected to be among the hardest hit.

Authorities have warned of heavy rainfall, strong and potentially damaging winds, intense lightning, and hail, all of which pose significant risks to life, property and infrastructure.

Flooding is anticipated on roads, bridges and in low-lying areas, while poor visibility and slippery surfaces are expected to create hazardous driving conditions.

Residents living in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, have been urged to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their families.

Motorists have been advised to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances and exercise extreme caution on wet roads. The municipality has also encouraged residents to remain indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel.

The city’s Disaster Management Directorate, along with emergency services, has been placed on high alert and stands ready to respond to any incidents.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official municipal communication platforms for updates and are warned not to attempt crossing swollen rivers or streams, particularly where water levels exceed ankle height.

In case of emergencies, residents can contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre.
