South African Police Service in Verulam are investigating a case of murder after a man was found shot dead north of Durban.
The victim’s body was discovered on Estuary Drive in Riverview on Tuesday morning. According to Prem Balram from Reaction Unit South Africa, emergency teams were dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting.
Balram said paramedics found the man lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound to the head and declared him dead at the scene.
Upon arrival, responders realised the deceased matched the description of a person reported missing earlier that morning.
Family members, who had initially visited Reaction Unit South Africa’s headquarters after hearing that a body had been recovered, were later taken to the scene where they identified the victim through his belongings.
Balram said the family was overcome with emotion, with paramedics providing assistance as more relatives arrived.
Police have opened a murder case, and the motive for the killing remains unknown.
