US President Donald Trump has removed a controversial social media post depicting himself in a Jesus-like image following strong criticism from religious leaders and conservative commentators.

The image, shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform late on Sunday, appeared to show the president dressed in flowing red and white robes, placing his hand on the forehead of a man resembling a sick patient. Light was seen emanating from his hand and head, while an American flag waved in the background and onlookers gazed at him in apparent reverence.

The AI-generated image was taken down on Monday after it sparked outrage, with critics accusing the president of blasphemy.

Responding to questions from journalists, Trump denied that the image was intended to portray him as Jesus Christ.

“I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor... It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better,” he said, adding that the image was linked to a humanitarian theme.

The post drew sharp criticism from several prominent conservative Christians, including commentator Megan Basham, who described it as “outrageous blasphemy” and called for its removal and an apology.

This is not the first time Trump has shared religious imagery. During his 2023 bank fraud trial, he posted artwork depicting himself seated alongside Jesus in a courtroom setting. His allies have also at times framed him in religious terms.

At a recent Easter event at the White House, televangelist Paula White-Cain likened Trump’s experiences to those of Jesus, referencing themes of betrayal and persecution.

Scholars say Trump’s use of religious symbolism has intensified, particularly following the 2024 assassination attempt. Matthew Taylor, a researcher on Christian nationalism, noted that Trump has increasingly embraced rhetoric suggesting a divine purpose behind his political role.

In a victory speech after the 2024 election, Trump told supporters that he believed his life had been spared “for a reason” tied to restoring the country.

However, analysts suggest the latest controversy could deepen divisions within his support base, particularly among Catholic voters already unsettled by geopolitical tensions and his public disagreements with Pope Leo.

Despite the backlash, historian Kristin du Mez said there is little indication that Trump’s core supporters will withdraw their backing, even as some distance themselves from the post.
