Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi is expected to return to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday morning to continue his testimony.

Mkhwanazi’s appearance before the commission was postponed last month following the death of his mother.

He has been implicated in alleged corruption linked to the EMPD “blue light” saga, which involves suspected crime cartel figure Vusimuzi Matlala, also known as “Cat”.

During earlier proceedings, Mkhwanazi admitted that he was not authorised to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Matlala’s company, Cat VIP Security. However, he denied signing a separate letter of authority that allegedly enabled an ongoing working relationship with the firm.

The deputy chief also faces allegations of involvement in the cleanup of a murder scene and has been linked to copper cable theft in Meyerton, Gauteng.

The commission continues to investigate claims of corruption and criminal activity within the metro police department.
