A KwaZulu-Natal woman accused of killing her two young children is currently under police guard in hospital and is expected to appear in court once she is medically fit.
The incident occurred last week at a home in Newcastle, where police discovered the bodies of a nine-month-old baby girl and her four-year-old sister, both of whom had sustained multiple stab wounds.
The children were declared dead at the scene.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the 26-year-old mother allegedly attempted to take her own life following the incident and was later admitted to hospital for treatment.
“It is reported that on Thursday, 9 April, two children were stabbed to death at the home,” Netshiunda said.
Police confirmed that the woman remains under guard and will only appear in court once she has recovered sufficiently to do so.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
