A major new shopping destination is set to open in Empangeni later this month, bringing several national retail brands to the region for the first time.
The Prince Buthelezi Mall will officially open its doors on 30 April, offering a wide mix of grocery, fashion, health, dining and lifestyle outlets across approximately 37,000 square metres.
The mall is named after the late Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who served as traditional prime minister to the Zulu royal family, founded the Inkatha Freedom Party, and previously served as Minister of Home Affairs.
Developers say the centre will house around 100 stores, with leading national retailers including Boxer, Checkers Fresh X, Checkers Liquor, Clicks, Dis-Chem, Edgars, Foschini, Roots Butchery, Shoprite and Woolworths Food.
A range of other well-known brands will also be present, including Billabong, Mugg & Bean, Milky Lane, Mr Price Home, Panarottis, Polo, Sorbet, Sportsman’s Warehouse and Xpresso Café. Several of these stores will be entering the Empangeni and Richards Bay markets for the first time.
The mall will also feature three drive-through outlets for Burger King, Steers and McDonald’s.
At the heart of the development is a central hub known as “The Social Quarter,” designed as a communal space with greenery, seating areas and recreational features. It includes a children’s play zone, a giant chess set, and workstations for study or remote work.
Visitors will also have access to charging stations, free Wi-Fi throughout the centre, and modern restroom facilities at no cost. The design aims to enhance comfort and convenience for shoppers.
Accessibility has been prioritised, with two entrances off the R102 and direct access from nearby N2 and R102 off-ramps. The mall also includes a taxi rank and public transport facilities to improve commuter access.
The opening weekend coincides with a long public holiday period and will feature live entertainment and promotional specials as the centre officially welcomes shoppers.
