Two security officers were left critically wounded after armed suspects carried out a robbery at a jewellery store in the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Umhlanga.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when gunmen entered the mall and targeted the store before attempting to flee.
According to KZN VIP Medics spokesperson Gareth Naidoo, the suspects opened fire on security personnel as they were confronted while exiting the premises.
“Two security officers were shot and left in a critical condition. One was stabilised on scene and transported rapidly to a nearby medical facility for further treatment,” Naidoo said.
The second injured officer was taken privately to a medical facility for urgent care.
Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram said a search was conducted in surrounding areas, but no suspects were immediately apprehended.
Mall management confirmed that the shopping centre remains fully operational and emphasised that the safety of tenants, shoppers, and staff is a top priority.
Authorities are continuing investigations, while the mall has committed to working closely with law enforcement and private security to maintain strict safety measures.
