Eastern Cape police say they are closely monitoring an ongoing service delivery protest in Qweba, formerly known as Kirkwood, which has severely disrupted movement in and out of the town.

The protest, allegedly led by taxi operators, has resulted in the blockade of all major entry and exit routes, leaving commuters stranded and affecting local transport.

Police spokesperson Majola Nkohli said several minibus taxis were used to obstruct key roads.

“Several minibus taxis were used to block main access routes to the area, which has disrupted commuters and other road users,” Nkohli said.

He added that law enforcement officials, including traffic officers, have been deployed to the scene to divert traffic and maintain order.

Members from various policing units remain on site, while government stakeholders, including senior political leaders, are engaging with protestors in an effort to resolve the situation.

Authorities have warned that prolonged disruptions could negatively impact the local economy as tensions continue.
