President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed a ceasefire agreement involving the United States, Israel and Iran, describing it as a constructive step toward easing tensions in the Middle East.
The agreement reportedly provides for a two-week pause in hostilities ahead of a deadline set by former US president Donald Trump, with negotiations expected to continue during the ceasefire period.
Ramaphosa said the development offers hope for reducing escalating conflict in the region.
“We are encouraged by the current initiatives and ongoing efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive end to the conflict in the Middle East. We welcome the announcement of a ceasefire and are hopeful that it will lay the foundation for a permanent resolution,” he said.
The President reiterated South Africa’s long-standing position that dialogue and mediation remain essential tools for resolving international conflicts.
“South Africa once again calls for dialogue and mediation to prevent further loss of life and destruction of property, and to ensure a just, sustainable, and lasting peace,” he added.
Ramaphosa further stressed that continued diplomatic engagement will be critical in securing long-term stability in the region.
