Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) Chief Yolande Faro has voiced concern over alleged financial misconduct within the unit, describing what she believes to be serious criminal activity involving the diversion of funds.

Faro is currently giving testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria, which is investigating allegations of corruption and tender manipulation within the City of Tshwane and its metro police department.

She told the commission that recent observations within the TMPD had prompted corrective measures and ongoing disciplinary action, but indicated that deeper issues may predate her leadership.

“Over the past weeks, I have come to learn with great shock and dismay about what was apparently taking place in the TMPD… it is not merely irregularities, but clear systems of siphoning of money and criminal activities,” Faro said.

The inquiry continues to examine governance and procurement practices within the metro police service as part of its broader mandate.
