Beachgoers are being urged to exercise caution as spring tides linked to the full moon are expected to impact coastal conditions over the Easter weekend.

The peak of the spring tide is set for Thursday, bringing stronger tidal variations in the days that follow.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has advised holidaymakers, swimmers, anglers and hikers to remain vigilant, warning that the conditions may increase the risk of dangerous rip currents.

NSRI spokesperson Andrew Ingram said both high and low tides will be more extreme than usual during this period.

“High tides and low tides will be higher and lower than normal throughout the weekend. Swimmers are urged to visit lifeguard-protected beaches, while anglers and hikers should exercise caution, particularly during incoming high tides in the afternoon,” he said.

Ingram also encouraged the public to follow tide tables, monitor weather updates from the South African Weather Service, and prioritise safety at all times.
