The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department has announced the rollout of 24-hour roadblocks across the city during the upcoming Easter long weekend, as authorities brace for increased traffic volumes.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla warned both motorists and pedestrians against unlawful and risky behaviour, particularly public drunkenness.

“With heavy traffic expected on all main arterials and freeways, the JMPD will maintain a zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations. Pedestrians are strictly prohibited from walking on or crossing freeways, and officers will be deployed to remove and fine those endangering themselves on high-speed routes,” Fihla said.

He added that increased patrols will be carried out in the Johannesburg inner city, townships and major transport hubs to manage heavy foot traffic and reduce the risk of accidents. Authorities have also identified alcohol consumption as a major contributor to road fatalities and violence during the holiday period.

Meanwhile, the City of Johannesburg says it is fully prepared for the busy travel period, with additional resources deployed to enhance road safety.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety Mgcini Tshwaku said surveillance vehicles have been increased to ensure compliance with traffic laws.

Speaking along the N12, Tshwaku said enforcement efforts will focus on drunk driving, reckless behaviour, expired vehicle licences, and roadworthiness checks.

“We will also conduct stop-and-search operations, as some vehicles may be used for transporting drugs or other illegal activities,” he said.
