A Grade 3 learner has died after a wall collapsed at a primary school in Daveyton, leaving five other pupils injured.
The incident occurred during lunch break at Lerutle Primary School, where a section of a wall reportedly gave way, falling onto six children.
According to the Gauteng Department of Education, emergency services responded swiftly, transporting all six pupils to various medical facilities for urgent treatment.
One of the injured learners later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident,” Chiloane said, as the department confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collapse.
The department has also deployed psychosocial support teams to assist affected pupils, teachers, and the bereaved family.
The incident comes as authorities continue probing a separate tragedy at Reagile Primary School in Tembisa, where a Grade 5 learner died after a soccer goal post allegedly fell on him during a break at the school.
