Armed robbers have targeted a school in KwaMashu, forcing staff to hand over personal belongings and money during a brazen attack. While no injuries were reported, the incident has left both learners and teachers deeply traumatised.

The gang stormed Zamokuhle Primary School on Friday, north of Durban, armed with firearms. According to South African Police Service, three suspects robbed security guards and educators of their valuables and allegedly forced victims to transfer money from their bank accounts.

Police confirmed that no shots were fired during the incident. A case of business robbery has been opened, and no arrests have been made at this stage.

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and cowardly.” He said the incident represents a direct threat to the country’s future, as it targets educators committed to shaping young minds.

Hlomuka added that affected learners and staff are receiving psychosocial support, while additional safety and security measures have been implemented at the school and surrounding institutions.

He has also called on communities to work closely with authorities to safeguard schools.

“The department is deeply concerned about the increasing incidents of violence in and around schools,” Hlomuka said, urging members of the public with any information to assist police in their ongoing investigation.
