A man in his 20s was shot dead on the Berea on Wednesday morning following an alleged confrontation with members of the South African Police Service.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Botanic Gardens Road, where paramedics from ALS were shown a male victim with a gunshot wound to the head.
"Paramedics assessed the man; however, he had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene," said ALS spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.
Preliminary reports suggest the man allegedly attacked a SAPS officer, who reportedly returned fire. Authorities have not yet confirmed the full circumstances, and the matter remains under investigation.
In a separate incident on Wednesday morning, traffic on North Coast Road was brought to a standstill following a seven-vehicle collision. Several people sustained injuries and were treated by the KZN VIP EMS before being transported to medical facilities.
SAPS spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
