Large crowds have been flocking to the beaches of Cape Town as the city experiences a severe heatwave.

The South African Weather Service reports record-breaking temperatures across parts of the Western Cape this week, with the Cape Town Central Business District registering highs exceeding 40°C.

Visitors are taking advantage of the sun-soaked weather. Mthokozisi Mkhungo, who is in the city from KwaZulu-Natal, said: “We are here today because yesterday it was very sunny, even in the shade it was still very hot. I decided to come to the beach early so I can enjoy the cooler hours before the heat rises again.”

Meanwhile, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has urged hikers to take extra precautions during the hot weather.

Managing Director Wahida Parker advised visitors to plan hikes in the early morning or late afternoon and to avoid unnecessary exposure. She also emphasised the importance of seeking help immediately if anyone feels unwell.

“We are thrilled to welcome guests to enjoy Table Mountain’s magnificent weather and breathtaking views. But safety remains our guiding principle. We encourage every visitor and hiker to stay hydrated and to dress appropriately for the conditions,” Parker said.
