Motorists travelling on the N2 in Durban have been warned of temporary lane closures at the uMngeni Interchange as maintenance work gets underway.

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) announced that the closures form part of Phase 1 of a construction programme to replace bridge parapets and repair infrastructure along the interchange.

According to SANRAL’s KwaZulu-Natal project manager Serisha Sukraj, the work will take place between 12 March and 15 April 2026.

The repairs include the replacement of parapets along the uMngeni Bridge on the northbound on-ramp from the N2 and on the southbound on-ramp from Inanda Road. Construction will also involve demolishing and replacing median barriers that separate the northbound and southbound lanes.

“As part of the bridge repair works, several temporary lane closures will be implemented at the interchange and on its immediate feeder roads within the defined construction area,” Sukraj said.

The closures will occur in stages to allow maintenance work to be carried out safely and efficiently.

The sequence of lane closures will begin with the northbound N2 off-ramp, followed by the southbound N2 on-ramp from Inanda Road, the southbound fast lane on the N2 and finally the northbound fast lane.

During this period, traffic will be channelled through narrower lanes within the construction zone.

SANRAL has advised motorists to expect delays and to allow extra travel time when passing through the affected areas.

“We urge all motorists to adhere to posted road signage and observe reduced speed limits when approaching and travelling through the construction zone,” Sukraj said.

She added that compliance with traffic management measures is essential to ensure the safety of both road users and construction workers while the repair work continues.
