The South Africa national rugby sevens team secured their third title in five tournaments during the 2026 season after a dominant victory in the Vancouver final, with head coach Philip Snyman praising his squad for a clinical performance.
The Blitzboks defeated Spain national rugby sevens team 38–12 in the final after an explosive first-half display that put the result beyond doubt.
South Africa had earlier been forced to dig deep in their semi-final clash against the Australia national rugby sevens team late on Sunday evening, before progressing to the final.
Following the result in Vancouver, the Blitzboks are now level on 86 log points with Fiji national rugby sevens team heading into the final tournament of the regular season, which will take place next weekend in New York City.
Fiji remain at the top of the standings due to a superior points differential of +201, narrowly ahead of South Africa’s +199. The two sides are the only teams still in contention to win the overall series.
Snyman said the team showed steady improvement throughout the tournament, culminating in a standout display in the final.
“We really improved game by game, and in the final the guys were very clinical and delivered one of the best performances I have seen by the Springbok Sevens in a long time,” he said.
The coach emphasised the importance of building consistency both on and off the field as part of the team’s long-term ambition to become the leading sevens programme in the world.
Snyman also welcomed the squad’s growing depth after securing back-to-back tournament victories despite making six changes to the lineup that won the previous event in Perth.
“The players will enjoy this win, but the job is not done,” he said, noting that the series title will be decided at the final tournament in New York.
He added that the team’s defensive work rate and ability to force turnovers played a crucial role in their success in Vancouver, while attention will now shift to recovery and preparation for the decisive final leg of the series.
