The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed deep concern following the arrest of a mathematics teacher from Ivory Park Secondary School, north of Johannesburg, for allegedly raping a Grade 12 learner.

The alleged incident is said to have occurred in December last year, when the learner was still in Grade 11. The matter was formally reported by the learner’s mother to the school on Monday.

The educator was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly attempted to evade authorities.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the incident was deeply troubling and reminded teachers of their duty of care towards pupils.

“Educators are entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing and guiding our children while they are in their environment. They must safeguard learners and ensure their well-being and development are not compromised,” he said.

The department said it will continue to work with law enforcement and provide the necessary support to the learner and her family as investigations proceed.
