The team behind the famously irreverent party game Cards Against Humanity is showing an unexpectedly generous side, proving that even a “game for horrible people” can come with a pretty wholesome heart.
Creators of Cards Against Humanity have announced they will refund customers who may have paid higher prices due to U.S. tariffs introduced during the administration of Donald Trump.
In a typically tongue-in-cheek, expletive-laced message on their website, the company said anyone who purchased the game and believes they overpaid can submit proof of purchase. If the company receives a tariff-related refund from the government, they pledge to pass 100% of that money back to customers.
The move follows a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that certain tariffs were unlawful. Rather than pocket any reimbursement, the game’s founders say the funds belong to the people who supported their business in the first place.
Since launching on Kickstarter in 2011, the edgy fill-in-the-blank card game has become a global hit, generating tens of millions of dollars annually. Yet despite rising costs tied to tariffs, the company says it never increased its wholesale prices, arguing that markups likely happened at large retail stores. That means customers may have unknowingly paid more at checkout.
Instead of shrugging it off, the company decided to act.
“If we get the money back,” the team wrote, “we’ll give it back to you.”
It’s not the first time the brand has leaned into creative problem-solving. At one point, they even released a special “informational” edition of the game to qualify for tariff exemptions a legal workaround delivered with their signature humor.
According to Fast Company, American firms are collectively seeking billions in tariff refunds. Shipping giant FedEx has also signaled plans to reimburse customers where possible, suggesting the card game maker may be part of a broader wave of give-backs.
For a company built on shock value and satire, the gesture lands surprisingly sincere.
Sometimes the punchline isn’t on the card it’s in the kindness.
And in this round, everyone wins.
