Police in KwaZulu-Natal have launched a manhunt for eight suspects following a brazen cash-in-transit robbery that left two security guards wounded on the N2 south of Durban.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when a cash delivery truck was intercepted by heavily armed assailants travelling in two vehicles.
According to police, the suspects opened fire on the vehicle, forcing it to a stop before detonating explosives in an apparent attempt to access the cash compartments.
Two security guards were shot during the attack. One remains in a critical condition in hospital, while the other sustained injuries but was stabilised.
South African Police Service provincial spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the group fled with several bags of money.
“It’s alleged that eight suspects, who were travelling in two vehicles, opened fire on the cash delivery truck and brought it to a stop. Two security guards were shot and injured in the process,” Netshiunda said.
He added that while the suspects escaped with cash, the vehicle’s safe remained intact.
Police have appealed to the public for assistance in tracking down those responsible. Anyone with information has been urged to contact their nearest police station or the Crime Stop hotline.
The heist caused traffic disruptions along the busy highway and has renewed concerns over the frequency and violence of cash-in-transit robberies in the province .
