The death toll from the building collapse in Ormonde has climbed to eight, as rescue and recovery teams continue searching through the rubble for those still missing.

Emergency crews resumed operations on Tuesday morning after efforts were suspended overnight due to safety concerns and fading light.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Xolile Khumalo confirmed that teams have located three individuals beneath the debris and are working to retrieve them.

“Recovery operations have commenced for three missing individuals who have been located, and teams are currently working to extract them from beneath the concrete slab. One person remains unaccounted for, bringing the total confirmed death toll to eight,” Khumalo said.

She added that operations were halted late on Monday evening before resuming at first light, with multiple agencies assisting in the search.

The collapse of the two-storey business park building has prompted an ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident, as authorities work to account for all victims and provide answers to affected families. Rescue teams remain on site, carefully combing through the wreckage in what has become a painstaking and emotionally charged operation.
