Ekurhuleni on high alert after heavy rain as storm damage reported in northern KZN

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services has placed teams on high alert following heavy downpours that swept through parts of the metro over the weekend and into Monday morning.

Although no life-threatening incidents have been reported, officials said emergency crews remain on standby to respond swiftly should conditions deteriorate. Rescue and aquatic units have also been activated as a precaution.

Spokesperson William Ntladi urged residents, motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution amid severe thunderstorm conditions.

He advised drivers to maintain safe following distances and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, while pedestrians were warned against crossing flooded streams or using submerged bridges. Residents living near flood-prone areas were also urged to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, severe weather has also battered parts of KwaZulu-Natal, where disaster management teams have been deployed to the uPhongolo Local Municipality following widespread storm damage.

The South African Weather Service issued a Level 2 warning for thunderstorms, accompanied by hail and damaging winds.

According to Senzelwe Mzila, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the storm uprooted trees and caused significant damage to both public and private infrastructure.

Assessment teams deployed by the MEC are currently surveying affected areas around the central business district to determine the extent of the destruction.

Provincial authorities have appealed to residents to remain alert as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist a timely reminder that when the skies turn grey, caution should be the first line of defence.
