Private investigator Paul O’Sullivan abruptly left a sitting of Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference within the justice system, telling members he needed to catch a flight.
O’Sullivan walked out despite attempts by several MPs to persuade him to remain and complete his testimony.
The committee is probing claims that elements within law enforcement and the broader justice system may have been compromised.
During his appearance, O’Sullivan rejected accusations that he had been operating as a spy in South Africa. He also faced questions relating to previous comments he made about a 6 July media briefing by Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Tensions rose when MK Party MP David Skosana accused O’Sullivan of interfering in police matters.
The early departure left some committee members frustrated, with proceedings continuing in his absence.
The ad hoc committee is expected to hear further testimony as it seeks to determine the extent of alleged misconduct and interference within the justice system.
