Police in Atlantis are investigating a fatal shooting outside a secondary school in Palmer Avenue, Avondale, that left two people dead and two pupils injured on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers from the South African Police Service responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 3pm.

It is understood an unidentified man approached a taxi that was parked outside the school while the driver was waiting to collect pupils. The suspect allegedly opened fire on the vehicle, shooting the driver, another adult man and two children.

Both adult victims died at the scene.

A 14-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound to her back, while a 16-year-old was grazed by a bullet. The teenagers were transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Police have opened two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder as investigations continue.

Preliminary information suggests the attack may be linked to a dispute over taxi routes, a long-standing source of tension in parts of the area.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward as they work to trace the suspect.
