Strict cost-containment measures have been implemented ahead of this year’s State of the Province Address in KwaZulu-Natal, as the provincial legislature moves to curb spending on the annual event.
Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce, said expenses linked to the large-scale bussing of guests from outside Pietermaritzburg, as well as catering and accommodation, have been significantly reduced.
The two-day programme is set to take place at Woodburn Stadium from Thursday and will feature Misuzulu kaZwelithini and Premier Thami Ntuli.
Boyce said that while the overall format of the event remains unchanged, the focus this year is firmly on fiscal discipline. She noted that as an oversight body, the legislature has a responsibility to model prudent and accountable spending.
She said organisers have continued with the two-day arrangement but have progressively trimmed high-cost items, including accommodation, catering and transport-related expenses.
The legislature maintains that the scaled-back approach will ensure the event proceeds as planned without placing unnecessary strain on the public purse proving that even official ceremonies can tighten their belts when needed.
