A manhunt is underway in Pietermaritzburg following a shootout with police early Tuesday, in which two suspects were killed and one remains at large.

The three suspects were discovered hiding in a house in Edendale in the early hours. They are believed to be part of a gang involved in a cash-in-transit heist on Jabu Ngcobo Road on Monday.

KZN SAPS officers, acting on intelligence about 12 individuals involved in the robbery, tracked the trio to the Nhlazatshe area around midnight. A gunfight erupted when police attempted to arrest them.

Two suspects were fatally shot, while one escaped. Police recovered two rifles, a handgun, and ammunition at the scene.

“A VW Polo, allegedly used in the cash-in-transit robbery, was recovered, along with a bakkie containing multiple number plates,” said spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.

No officers were injured during the exchange, and the search for the remaining suspect is ongoing.
