A four-week-old giraffe calf with a tiny tuft of hair and an even bigger dose of charm is quickly becoming the feel-good star of the season.

Born at Toledo Zoo & Aquarium in Toledo, little Eugene has captured the attention of visitors and social media alike not just for his long legs and wobbly steps, but for the delightfully scruffy “hairdo” perched atop his head.

Weighing in at a healthy 130 pounds at birth, Eugene arrived on January 17 and immediately made himself at home among the zoo’s herd of seven giraffes. It didn’t take long for staff and fans to notice his standout feature: a soft, windswept tuft that seems permanently styled for cuteness.

“He’s got his little tuft of hair on top of his head,” said zoo representative Jennifer Brassil. “The public is just loving him.”

After inviting the public to help choose a name, caregivers settled on “Eugene” a pick that many say suits the young calf perfectly. Slightly quirky, undeniably sweet, and full of character, the name seems to match his growing personality.

Eugene is the first calf for mom Lily and dad Rocket, making the arrival extra special for the herd. Since being introduced to the other giraffes, the youngster has blended in beautifully, drawing curious sniffs and gentle attention from his towering companions while confidently exploring his surroundings.

Caretakers say he’s already showing signs of independence, trotting around with playful energy and steadily “growing into” his name day by day.

For now, visitors can spot Eugene indoors while winter temperatures linger. Once spring warmth arrives typically around 50°F and up he’ll make his outdoor debut in the zoo’s Africa exhibit, where fans will be able to see his famous coif bouncing in the sunshine.

Until then, photos and videos of the fuzzy-topped calf continue to brighten feeds and faces alike.

Proof, perhaps, that sometimes all it takes to lift spirits is a baby giraffe… and a really good hair day.
