At least five people have died and 34 others have been hospitalised after a bus veered off the N1 highway and plunged down an embankment near Musina, outside Louis Trichardt, on Thursday.
Authorities believe the driver lost control of the vehicle before it left the roadway and crashed down a steep slope. The bus was reportedly carrying 39 passengers at the time of the incident.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the group had been travelling from Gauteng to Musina, where they were expected to board another bus en route to Zimbabwe.
Rescue teams confirmed that three people remain trapped beneath the wreckage as emergency crews work to free them. Traffic and medical personnel remain on site managing recovery and treatment efforts.
The crash occurred at the same stretch of road where another bus accident claimed 43 lives last October, raising fresh concerns about safety along the route.
The highway has been closed to traffic, and motorists have been urged to use alternative routes while operations continue.
Authorities say the situation is still unfolding, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
