The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has suspended the licence of a motorist caught speeding on the province’s south coast in December, issuing a warning about the dangers of reckless driving.
The Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court ordered Musa Mnguni to pay a R30,000 fine or serve eight months in prison after being caught exceeding the speed limit.
Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Park Rynie nabbed Mnguni after he was recorded travelling at 172 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.
“This irresponsible driver was arrested on 10 December 2025 by the no-nonsense RTI Park Rynie team after dangerously exceeding the speed limit,” Sibiya said.
He added that the suspension sends a strong message about road safety. “A driver’s licence is a legally granted privilege, not a constitutional right. We will take it away to prevent reckless behaviour that could endanger lives,” he said.
Sibiya highlighted that the RTI is applying the law uniformly, using advanced technology to monitor and apprehend drivers across all sectors, including professionals such as lawyers, doctors, engineers, and police.
“No one is above the law,” he said, emphasizing the department’s commitment to keeping roads safe.
The case serves as a reminder that speeding and reckless driving carry serious legal consequences in KwaZulu-Natal.
