Emergency responders have recounted the traumatic aftermath of a deadly shooting on the R33 near Pietermaritzburg, where a man was killed and a woman injured after gunmen opened fire on their vehicle.
Paramedics were dispatched to the scene near Cramond on Monday, initially believing they were attending to a motor vehicle accident.
However, upon arrival, crews discovered the occupants had been shot.
According to Andrew Brown, operations manager at Mi7 EMS, the pair were travelling along the R33 when another vehicle pulled up alongside them and opened fire.
“They were driving towards the Cramond area when a vehicle pulled up next to them and opened fire, hitting both of them,” Brown said.
The driver reportedly lost control after the shooting, causing the car to veer off the road and down an embankment, where it came to a stop.
“When paramedics arrived, they found that two people had sustained gunshot wounds,” Brown explained.
The male driver had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene. The female passenger, who was also shot, was found in a stable condition.
She received advanced life support treatment on site before being transported to hospital for further medical care.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
