The Gauteng Department of Education has appointed an independent law firm to investigate the death of a Grade R pupil at Bernard Isaacs Primary School in Coronationville.

Five-year-old Manqoba Mnisi was reportedly injured on Monday, 2 February, after allegedly being left unattended in a classroom during a school function. He was later taken to hospital, where he died.

The child’s family has questioned the school’s version of events, saying details provided do not align with what they observed. Frustration has grown among relatives and community members, some of whom have staged protests outside the school demanding clarity and accountability.

“We need justice and answers about what happened that day,” said the boy’s aunt, Phumla Malandisa. “They said he fainted near the toilets, but he had blood on the side of his mouth. We just want the truth because there are many conflicting stories.”

In a statement, the department said the independent investigation will seek to establish the full facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. The appointed law firm is expected to meet with Manqoba’s family next Tuesday as part of the inquiry.

Matome Chiloane, the province’s Education MEC, visited the family on Friday to offer support and assurances that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

Authorities say the findings of the probe will guide any further action as the community awaits answers.
