The Eastern Cape Health Department has issued an urgent alert following a suspected outbreak of illness among children in Aberdeen.

Officials report a rise in cases presenting with similar respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms at local health facilities between 30 January and early February.

Provincial Health Department spokesperson Camagwini Mavovana said the situation is currently classified as a suspected localised outbreak, pending laboratory confirmation. Most cases are mild and manageable, but authorities are closely monitoring developments.

“Children have presented with fever, sore throat, runny nose, loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and in some cases respiratory issues, particularly in those under five years,” Mavovana said.

Parents and caregivers are urged to keep children hydrated, maintain strict hygiene, and seek medical attention promptly if symptoms persist or worsen, especially in cases of fever, vomiting, or breathing difficulties.
