A suspected drug dealer who was out on bail in KwaZulu-Natal has been rearrested on fresh drug-related charges following a police operation in Newcastle.
The 37-year-old man was apprehended alongside another suspect during a joint operation involving the SAPS Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit and private security officers.
According to provincial police spokesperson Paul Magwaza, officers received intelligence about a consignment of drugs allegedly being transported from Gauteng to Newcastle. The primary suspect was placed under surveillance on Monday before police moved in to make the arrest.
“The suspect was found in possession of drugs, and a search at his residence led to the recovery of crystal meth. The 37-year-old suspect, who is out on bail on a drug-related matter, was placed under arrest and charged with dealing in drugs,” Magwaza said.
Police later received information about a second suspect who was reportedly preparing to leave his home with a large quantity of drugs. Officers intercepted the man and searched his vehicle, where they allegedly discovered crystal meth and an undisclosed amount of cash. He was also arrested and charged with drug dealing.
Both suspects are expected to appear in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to curb the flow of narcotics into the province.
