A cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle was bombed on the N2 near Chesterville on Monday night, leaving one security guard injured and forcing the temporary closure of the northbound carriageway.
Images from the scene show the armoured vehicle engulfed in flames, with debris scattered across the roadway following the explosion.
Police responded swiftly, securing the area and dispersing a large group of looters who had gathered to collect cash strewn along the route after the blast. Traffic was temporarily halted as emergency services worked at the scene.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed that two security guards were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.
“Paramedics assessed the two men, and one of them sustained minor to moderate injuries as a result of the explosion. He was treated on scene by ALS Paramedics,” Jamieson said.
The circumstances leading up to the robbery are under investigation, with the South African Police Service probing the incident.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any suspects have been arrested.
