More than 300 motorists are expected to appear in Durban courts on Monday following a weekend crackdown on drunk driving across KwaZulu-Natal.
The provincial Department of Transport confirmed that arrests were made in several areas, including Umhlanga near Oceans Mall, as part of intensified road safety operations.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said those arrested included individuals from various professions, among them a priest, a police officer and a paramedic in Newcastle. Five teachers were also taken into custody in KwaMashu.
Additional arrests were recorded in KwaDabeka, Inanda, Umbilo and central Durban.
According to the department, 242 motorists were caught driving under the influence on Friday and Saturday, with a further 115 arrested on Sunday, bringing the total to more than 350.
Sibiya said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and curb reckless behaviour behind the wheel.
“Drinking and driving will not be tolerated. That is the clear message from the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma,” he said.
Authorities say the campaign will continue as they work to protect all road users and reduce alcohol-related crashes on the province’s roads.
