Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says he will continue to lead the party even if he is removed from Parliament, insisting that his political role extends beyond holding a seat in the National Assembly.
Speaking at the close of the EFF’s second Plenum in Boksburg on Sunday, Malema assured party officials that his leadership remains secure and that any legal or parliamentary developments would not weaken his position within the organisation.
His remarks follow his conviction in October last year in the East London Magistrate’s Court on several firearms-related charges, including the unlawful possession and discharge of a firearm during a 2018 rally. Malema has lodged an appeal and maintains that the process suspends any custodial sentence.
Addressing supporters, Malema said that even if efforts to remove him from Parliament were successful, he would continue serving the party and its supporters from outside the legislature. He described the party’s headquarters, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela House, as an alternative platform to represent the public.
Malema reiterated that his involvement in politics is rooted in activism rather than formal office, stating that his commitment to what he calls the broader struggle for South Africa’s liberation remains unchanged.
