At least eleven people have been killed in a multi-vehicle collision on the R102 in Isipingo, south of Durban.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed the fatalities and said several others were seriously injured in the crash, which occurred near Lotus Park, just off the M35.

“At this stage, I can confirm that 11 people have been confirmed deceased on the scene, and approximately eight others have been rushed to various hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to critical,” Jamieson said.

He confirmed that one of the victims was a child. Jamieson also said the driver of a minibus taxi remains severely trapped in the wreckage, with the fire department working to extricate him.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are still unclear, and investigations are ongoing.

Jamieson said ALS Paramedics, along with additional ambulances and advanced life support teams, are on the scene assisting emergency services.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes, as the scene is expected to take a considerable amount of time to clear due to the severity of the crash and the number of vehicles involved.
