The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), demanding the latest statistics and detailed information on rape allegations involving South African Police Service (SAPS) members.
The party is also calling for a comprehensive and updated report on the most recent cases, including the status of investigations and outcomes.
According to the DA, Gauteng has recorded the highest number of reported cases, with 27 allegations, followed by the Eastern Cape with 16 and the Western Cape with 15.
DA Member of Parliament Lisa-Maré Schickerling said the party is seeking accountability and transparency in how such cases are handled.
“Over the past three years, nearly 330 rape cases have been reported against police members, including incidents where officers were on duty and cases involving people in police custody. This represents a shocking abuse of power and a profound betrayal of public trust,” Schickerling said.
She added that the DA is demanding clarity on disciplinary and criminal processes, including suspensions, arrests, dismissals and prosecutions.
“Police officers who commit rape must face the full force of the law, just like any other criminal,” Schickerling said.
