Extremely high temperatures are expected across parts of the Northern Cape, Free State and North West, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a heat wave warning that is set to remain in effect until Friday.
Forecasters say temperatures in Upington, in the Northern Cape, are expected to climb to a scorching 40 degrees Celsius by Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to take precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.
SAWS meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela said a prolonged spell of intense heat is anticipated across several regions.
“A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected in places over the Northern Cape, stretching into the Free State as well as the southern parts of the North West until Friday, the 30th of January 2026,” Thobela said.
He added that Upington is forecast to peak at 40 degrees Celsius, De Aar at 36 degrees and Kimberley at 37 degrees.
“The public is urged to keep cool, drink plenty of water and remember to use sunscreen,” Thobela said.
Residents, particularly the elderly, children and those with underlying health conditions, have been advised to limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and to seek medical help if they experience symptoms of heat exhaustion.
