A man died on Wednesday morning after he allegedly stepped into the path of an oncoming truck on the R102 southbound, opposite the Cornubia Flats in KwaZulu-Natal.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to the scene at around 06:42 following reports of a pedestrian being struck by a white FUSO 4-ton truck. According to the driver, the man had been standing at the roadside moments before the collision and suddenly ran directly in front of the vehicle. The driver said he was unable to stop in time.

Witnesses from a nearby housing complex told officers the man had been loitering along the roadway for some time and appeared to be watching traffic before the incident occurred. He was described as wearing a hoodie pulled tightly around his face and was barefoot.

RUSA paramedics assessed the man, who was declared dead at the scene. Police have opened an inquest docket and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
