A new Public Protector’s office is set to be established in northern KwaZulu-Natal, a move officials say will strengthen accountability and improve access to justice for rural communities.
KZN Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi finalised an agreement with Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka on Thursday to open the office in Ulundi. The facility will be housed in the Old Legislature Building.
Buthelezi said the office will play a vital role in investigating complaints against state institutions and ensuring residents receive fair treatment. His spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila, noted that the new branch will also help promote good governance across the region.
“This strategic decision marks a significant step towards improving access to justice and accountability for rural communities,” Mzila said. “The office will serve residents in the districts of King Cetshwayo, Zululand, Umkhanyakude, Umzinyathi, and Amajuba, ensuring they can access essential services without travelling long distances.”
Buthelezi welcomed the development, calling it a progressive step toward protecting community rights and strengthening public service delivery.
