A Durban man who evaded police for more than a year after the attempted murder of his nine-year-old nephew has been arrested in the North West.

Police say the attack occurred in January 2024 in Chesterville, Durban, and was allegedly carried out as an act of revenge against the child’s father. The suspect, Sduduzo Nkosikhona Mavundla, was initially arrested during the early stages of the investigation but later released on bail. He failed to appear in court, prompting the issuing of a warrant of arrest in September last year.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said Mavundla, 29, was located and arrested on Tuesday evening in Hebron.
“After receiving tasking from their KwaZulu-Natal counterparts, the Brits Crime Intelligence and Brits Trio Task Team traced Sduduzo to the Itereleng Section in Hebron,” he said.

Netshiunda added that Mavundla was apprehended while casually watching soccer at a local tavern. He will be transported back to KwaZulu-Natal, where he is expected to appear in court soon.
