The South African Weather Service has issued multiple warnings as severe thunderstorms continue to lash parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the Free State.
A Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms and excessive lightning has been declared for the Highveld of Mpumalanga and northern Gauteng. A Yellow Level 2 alert is also in effect for southern Gauteng, the eastern Free State, south-western Limpopo, and sections of the Highveld and southern escarpment of Mpumalanga.
Forecasters say the stormy conditions are set to persist across Gauteng into Tuesday, bringing widespread thunderstorms and cooler temperatures.
Senior forecaster Samkelisiwe Thwala says several parts of the province remain at heightened risk.
“We are expecting mostly scattered showers and thundershowers across the province, with cool temperatures. A Level 4 warning is in place for the northeastern areas due to severe thunderstorms, along with a Yellow Level 2 warning across the province,” she said.
Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts are continuing in uMshwathi, outside Pietermaritzburg, where two people were swept away in flash floods on Sunday night. The heavy downpours caused extensive damage to homes and roads, and the body of a woman in her 40s was recovered on Monday.
