A Hawks member and a senior official from Tembisa Hospital are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Monday on charges of corruption, after they allegedly attempted to bribe a fellow Hawks investigator probing irregular tenders at the hospital.

The case stems from a broader investigation into large-scale financial misconduct at Tembisa Hospital. Earlier this year, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) uncovered that billions of rands in public funds were siphoned off through fraudulent tenders.

According to Hawks spokesperson Thandi Mbambo, the accused pair allegedly offered R100 000 to the investigator, unaware that he was part of an undercover sting operation.

“It is alleged that on Friday, 21 November 2025, a DPCI officer was approached by a 41-year-old sergeant from the DPCI,” Mbambo said. “The sergeant indicated that a 53-year-old Tembisa Hospital official wanted assistance to avoid prosecution in the ongoing investigation and was willing to offer gratification.”

The suspects met the investigator two days later and allegedly handed over the cash, leading to their arrest.

Both accused are expected to face charges related to corruption and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
