A major upgrade to the water supply network in southern Durban is on track for commissioning within the next nine months, according to engineers overseeing the Southern Aqueduct project. The initiative involves constructing a new 24-kilometre bulk water pipeline to replace ageing infrastructure that has long exceeded its 50-year lifespan.

Members of the Presidential eThekwini Working Group and the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry conducted an oversight visit to the construction site in Northdene, Queensburgh, to assess progress.

The aqueduct is a crucial supply line for several southern communities, including Chatsworth, Klaarwater, Folweni, and Umlazi.

Presenting the progress report, project representative Ndudzo Mtshali said two old concrete pipelines are being replaced with modern steel pipes, increasing both durability and capacity.

“In terms of project timelines, we are looking at August 2026 for final commissioning. However, we already have a shutdown scheduled for the 18th of this month, when we will begin bringing new sections online,” Mtshali said.

He added that the project has been divided into six sections to carefully manage water interruptions.

“There are many people affected by this supply. When we shut down the system, we must ensure the work is done quickly so that reservoirs can recover and continue supplying residents.”

The current pre-stressed concrete pipes installed roughly 70 years ago are now being replaced to improve reliability and meet future demand.
